VAXHOLMS FÄSTNINGS MUSEUM

The Fortress Museum, the largest museum in the archipelago is housed within Vaxholm Fortress. The museum show cases, among other things, the defense of the archipelago and the fascinating history of the fortress over 500 years. Here you find several different exhibitions and activities for children. Guided tours are available daily and are included in the entrance fee. Take the passenger boat from Vaxholm quay.

HEMBYGDSMUSEET

In the Local Heritage Center, you’ll find the Local Heritage Museum. Here, an exhibition on herring fishing and how a fishing family lived during the late 19th century is showcased. The museum is run by the Vaxholm Local Heritage Society. Next to the museum, you’ll find the popular Café Hembygdsgården.

VAXHOLM FORTRESS

A mine located on Resarö near Ytterby. Over 200 years ago, a heavy black stone was discovered here, marking the beginning of a remarkable development in Swedish chemical research. In the minerals of the mine, a total of nine elements have been discovered over the years. Ytterby is the place in the world with the most elements named after it. The elements discovered here are: Yttrium, Ytterbium, Terbium, Erbium (all named after Ytterby), as well as Holmium, Scandium, Thulium, Gadolinium and Tantalum. This is an unmanned site with signage that can be visited independently.
